Scuba Diving Plastic Coated Weights
Use of plastic-coated diving weights
Plastic-coated weights are designed for use on a diving belt (or integrated weight systems in BCDs). They provide the necessary ballast to help a diver achieve neutral buoyancy underwater, just like traditional lead weights. The main difference is that the lead core is covered with a durable plastic coating.
Advantages compared to bare lead weights:
- Corrosion protection: The plastic coating prevents direct contact of lead with water, reducing oxidation and corrosion.
- Environmental safety: Since the lead is encapsulated, it minimizes the release of lead particles into the sea or onto the diver’s gear.
- Comfort and handling: The smooth plastic surface is more comfortable against the diver’s body and less likely to damage wetsuits or equipment.
- Durability: The coating increases resistance to wear, scratches, and deformation compared to exposed lead.
- Aesthetics: Plastic-coated weights often come in different colors and have a cleaner appearance than bare, oxidized lead.
